Oil Pulling 101

Organic Coconut Oil

Organic Coconut Oil

Traditionally oil pulling is done by placing about a teaspoon of sesame or coconut oil into your mouth and gently swishing it around and through your teeth for 20 minutes.  After the 20 minutes you need to spit the oil out into a garbage can (your sink is not recommended as it may clog your drains over time) and then brush your teeth as you normally would (some people have reported that they no longer need to brush their teeth after oil pulling.)  My husband was a little instant that I should still continue to brush my teeth.

What I have found so far is that my teeth are a lot whiter!  Actually, quite a bit whiter and I've only been oil pulling for a little less then a week (I am doing it twice a day instead of just in the morning as well).  I have also found that my teeth "have that just been cleaned at the dentist" feeling.  Apparently plaque is oil soluble not water soluble which means the oil that you are swishing around in your mouth is removing plaque and other bacteria from every nook and cranny in your mouth.  The most important part of oil pulling is to not swallow it.  It's full of bad, yucky and unhealthy stuff that you want to get rid of so make sure that you spit all of it out.  (If the combination of liquified oil and saliva in your mouth has increased to the point where your mouth feels like it is going to explode or you risk swallowing some of it then gently drizzle a little out of your mouth to keep swishing.)

As well as having whiter looking and smoother feeling teeth I have noticed a reduction in my tooth sensitivity.  As I have been getting older I have noticed that cold and sweets can cause a bit of discomfort when they come into contact with my teeth.  The sensitivity has decreased in just a few days.

One other great side effect I have noticed with oil pulling is that my lips get super hydration from the little bit of coconut oil that sits around my lips while I swish it.

Do you think you will try oil pulling?
